Oilcloth Place Mats
Use a different fabric pattern for each side of these mats. To clean the place mats, wipe them with a sponge dampened in warm soapy water, and dry with a soft cloth. If the mats crease while in storage, lay them flat, and they'll smooth out shortly.
- Straight-head pins
- Pinking shears
Cut out two 15 1/2-by-20 1/2-inch pieces of oilcloth. (Martha uses a floral pattern for the front and gingham for the back.)
Pin the wrong sides together. Use a new needle in the sewing machine and the velvet foot, and set the stitch length to 3. (If the stitches are too close together, it will perforate the material.)
Sew around all 4 sides, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Using pinking shears, trim the 4 sides of the place mats.
