Pivot Questionnaire

The Martha Stewart Show, October October Fall 2007 2007

Every week on Bravo's "Inside the Actors Studio," James Lipton, the show's creator, executive producer, writer, and host, asks his guests the same series of 10 questions. Today, Martha shares her answers, and James reveals his personal responses to the pivot questionnaire.

1. What is your favorite word?
Yes.

2. What is your least favorite word?
No.

3. What turns you on (creatively, spiritually or emotionally)?
Creative genius.

4. What turns you off?
Incompetence.

5. What sound or noise do you love?
Purring.

6. What sound or noise do you hate?
Rattling, vibrations, beeping.

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Farming.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
Teach a language.

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Martha, where have you been? We've been waiting for years and years and years.

James's Answers
1. What is your favorite word?
Honor.

2. What is your least favorite word?
The N-word, no matter who says it. It's a word that was meant to injure, and no context makes it acceptable.

3. What turns you on (creatively, spiritually or emotionally)?
Words. They are our most precious natural resource.

4. What turns you off?
Humiliation. Especially toward a helpless child.

5. What sound or noise do you love?
Silence. The most underestimated quality of our lives.

6. What sound or noise do you hate?
The din that passes for fun in many public places, which is, of course, the opposite of silence.

7. What is your favorite curse word?
It's very disappointing. Well, it's neither obscene nor scatological. When I'm really annoyed, I say "Jesus Christ." That's how one can tell.

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Classical dancer, but with this proviso: forever young and never injured.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
Easy answer for me: executioner.

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
See, Jim, you were wrong: I exist. But you may come in anyway. Oh, by the way, Jim, if you would like to continue "Inside the Actors Studio," we got a couple of people here. How about Shakespeare, Molier...
