Magnetic Silly Putty

Remember silly putty as a kid? There's a secret ingredient to giving mind-blowing magnetic properties to the familiar goopy, stretchy substance. It bounces, molds, stretches, snaps, and (now) warps to magnets.

materials

  • Plastic wrap
  • Silly putty
  • Black iron oxide powder

steps

  1. Remove putty from container.

  2. Work the putty in your hands to warm it up, then stretch into a sheet.

  3. Covered with wax paper or another non-stick material to protect your work surface.

  4. Spoon one tablespoon of black iron oxide powder onto the putty.

  5. Wearing gloves, knead and mix powder into the putty; continue for three to four minutes.

  6. Play with magnets! (Use strong magnets such as neodymium magnets.)
