Before: Dark Interiors
"We purchased this 1960s home; the family room had old parquet flooring and the standard brick fireplace and dark paneling over the mantel, plus dark beams on the ceiling," says homeowner Suzanne Bagheri of Bethesda, Maryland. Pictured here is her husband; the couple DIYed the room together!
"The dark brick overwhelmed the room, and the beams made our ceiling appear very low. We changed out the flooring, painted the beams and paneling in creamy white, and I whitewashed the brick hearth."

After: Bright and Thrifty
"I also added a fresh coat of BM Guilford Green on the walls and added my thrift-store finds. The room is now bright and inviting!"

"I like the glass top and detail on this piece, and it has made its way from room to room in my home."

After: Calming Colors
"I prefer the calmer, more relaxed colors; they're soothing. They also allow more flexibility in styling the room, such as with art and decor."
