How to Make a Firming, Brightening Spirulina Face Mask

You will love the effects of this honey and spirulina face mask! It also contains evening primrose and other essential oils that will breathe new life into your skin. This mask is moisturizing and tightening and also helps to prevent breakouts and promote cell regeneration. Basically, it does it all!

If you are not familiar with spirulina, it is a blue-green algae that has been around since the beginning of time. Spirulina contains almost all known antioxidants -- vitamins C, E, B1, B5 and B6, zinc, manganese, copper, and beta-carotene, and many others. These vitamins and minerals help fight free radicals, eliminate toxins from the skin, and increase the skin’s ability to regenerate new skin cells.

Raw honey is healing to the skin. It is antiseptic, antifungal, and antimicrobial. Honey also contains a high level of gluconic acid, which gently exfoliates the skin, brightening and evening out the skin tone. Best of all, it is Mother Nature’s humectant, retaining the skin’s natural moisture.

Evening primrose oil and spirulina both contain omega-6 gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that is helpful in soothing dry skin, psoriasis, and acne. Evening primrose oil nourishes the skin with anti-inflammatory properties and protects the integrity of the skin’s cells.

Frankincense and geranium essential oils have been added to this recipe for two reasons. They are both known to be beneficial to skin health, plus they mask the aroma of the spirulina (which to be honest, smells a little icky). Frankincense and geranium oils are both thought to reduce the appearance of fine lines and scarring. You may substitute other essential oils that are safe to use directly on the skin, such as lavender, if you prefer.

Be sure to do a 24-hour patch test on the underside of your arm before using this mask directly on your face.
