"Le Chien A La Mode" Knit Dog Outfit

Breton stripes and a jaunty beret are the epitome of canine chic. This delightfully Gallic combo will be coveted by all four-legged fashionistas who crave a wardrobe full of Chien-el and Pooch-ini. Introduction

Sizes: Two sizes: small (medium) — see coat measurements below to determine which size suits your dog.

Measurements of knitted coat

Length measured along back 13 (16) in/33 (41) cm

Width measured around chest 16 (21¾) in/40 (54.5) cm

materials

  • Gauge 22 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inch/10 cm square over stockinette stitch using size 6 (4mm) needles.

  • 2 (3) x 1¾ oz (50g) balls each of Debbie Bliss Mia (50% cotton, 50% wool; double-knitting weight) in white (A) and marine blue (B), approximately 218 (327) yd/200 (300) m each and small amount in ruby red (C).

  • Pair each of sizes 3 and 6 (3.25mm and 4mm) knitting needles

  • Set of four size 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed knitting needles

  • Length of black shirring elastic for beret

steps

  1. Back of coat: With size 3 (3.25mm) needles and B, cast on 44 (60) stitches. Knit 5 rows. Change to size 6 (4mm) needles. Beginning with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch until back measures 3. (4.) in./9 (11) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a purl row.** Continue in stockinette stitch and stripes of 2 rows B and 6 rows A, until back measures 10. (13.) in./ 26 (34) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a 6-row A stripe. Continue in stripe sequence and work as follows: Next row (right side) -- knit to end. Next row -- knit 3, purl to last 3 stitches, knit 3. Repeat the last 2 rows 7 times more, so ending with a 6-row A stripe.

  2. Change to size 3 (3.25mm) needles and B. Knit 3 rows. Bind off.

  3. Front of coat: Work as given for back to **. Beginning with a knit row, work 2 rows B and 6 rows A in stockinette stitch.

  4. Shape for leg holes: Continue in stripe sequence as given for back, working as follows: Bind off 10 (12) stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. 24 (36) stitches. Work 16 rows more. Cast on 10 (12) stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. 44 (60) stitches. Continue in stockinette stitch and stripe sequence until front measures 10. (13.) in./26 (34) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a 6-row A stripe.

    Change to size 3 (3.25mm) needles and B. Knit 3 rows. Bind off.

  5. Leg hole edgings: Sew side seams, leaving leg hole edges open. With right side facing, size 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed needles and A, pick up and knit 48 (52) stitches around leghole edge. Arrange stitches over three of the needles. Rib round [Knit 1, purl 1] to end. Rib 4 rounds more. Bind off loosely in rib.

  6. Beret: With size 3 (3.25mm) needles and B, cast on 64 stitches. Knit 5 rows.

  7. Change to size 6 (4mm) needles. Increase row: Knit 5 [Make one stitch by picking up the loop lying between the stitch just worked and the next stitch and working into the back of it (M1), knit 1, M1, knit 8] 6 times, M1, knit 1, M1, knit 4. 78 stitches. Then knit 3 rows. Increase row: Knit 6, [M1, knit 1, M1, knit 10] 6 times, M1, knit 1, M1, knit 5. 92 stitches. Then knit 3 rows. Increase row: Knit 7, [M1, knit 1, M1, knit 12] 6 times, M1, knit 1, M1, knit 6. 106 stitches. Then knit 8 rows.

  8. Decrease row: K6, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 10] 6 times, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 5. 92 stitches. Then, knit 4 rows. Decrease row: Knit 5, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 8] 6 times, skp, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 4. 78 stitches. Then, knit 4 rows. Decrease row: Knit 4, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 6] 6 times, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 3. 64 stitches. Then, knit 4 rows. 

  9. Decrease row: Knit 3, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 4] 6 times, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2. 50 stitches. Then, knit 4 rows. Decrease row: Knit 2, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2] 6 times, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1. 36 stitches. Then knit 4 rows. Decrease row: Knit 1, [slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together] 6 times, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, knit 2 together. 22 stitches. Then, knit 1 row. Decrease row: [Knit 2 together] to end. 11 stitches.

  10. Cut off yarn, thread end through remaining stitches, pull to gather, and secure.

  11. To finish beret: Sew beret seam. With C, make a pom-pom 1. in./4 cm in diameter and sew securely to the top of the beret. Attach a length of shirring elastic to the beret to keep it in place on your dog's head.
