materials

  • Poster board

  • Craft knife and cutting mat

  • Spray adhesive

  • Veneer sheets and veneer tape

  • Hot-glue gun

  • Marker in color matching poster board (optional)

steps

  1. For top and bottom: Cut poster board into four 8 1/2-by-11-inch pieces. Print templates onto 2 pieces. Use spray adhesive to back each printed template with another sheet of poster board, then join a veneer sheet to each pair (so you have two 3-layer pieces with templates showing on one side of each). Cut out according to templates, making 1 top and 1 bottom. For sides: Join 2 more pieces of poster board with spray adhesive. Adhere four 17-inch-long strips of veneer tape to poster board; cut out.

  2. Dab hot glue along edge of one strip. Position onto top piece of box according to template, starting at top V of heart; work carefully and add more glue as needed to align strip. (We glued veneer facing in.) Repeat, adding second strip to box top. Trim ends at bottom of heart for a neat point. If desired, use marker to fill in any cut-paper edges for a seamless look. Repeat for bottom of box.
