Introduction

Sources

Alphabet and number set, 1/4", $30; and single shoulder of leather, 4–5 oz., $39, michaels.com
Craft knife, $12, and screw punch, $25, by Martha Stewart Crafts, michaels.com

materials

  • Alphabet and number leather stamps

  • Leather

  • Tape and two rulers

  • Wooden mallet

  • Craft knife and screw punch

steps

  1. Practice stamping letters on scrap leather to get a feel for how hard to hit stamp with mallet. Print template.

  2. Trace template onto leather with a pencil.

  3. Tape down 2 rulers, leaving just enough room between them for stamps. (For ours, the name begins 1/2 inch above center of tag; city name begins 1/2 inch below.)

  4. Stamp letters, using mallet to hit each stamp just once for a clean impression (as opposed to repeated lighter hits).

  5. Cut out shape and line on strap with craft knife. Make 2 holes on strap with screw punch.
