This month, take a moment to celebrate the guy who greets you at your front door every night -- your dog (or dogs)! August 26th is National Dog Day, which means now is the time to break out the dog-themed decor to honor your pup. Invite your friends over and have them bring their own furry pals -- it'll be a barking-good time!
I love the cocktail culture in the Pink Panther movie of the 1960s. It was so glamorous, so effortlessly swank -- and nobody seemed to be trying too hard. Since I can't get myself (or my friends) invited to one of those celluloid soirees, I do what I can to re-create the vibe when I entertain. I use lots of silver and glass: As many reflective surfaces as possible help set the stage. And I keep the menu limited -- there are options but not endless options. This makes it possible for me to spend time mixing with my guests rather than mixing drinks all night.
By the time of her baby shower, mother-to-be and Martha Stewart Living food editor Elizabeth Colling had already received practical gifts -- burp cloths, onesies, and such -- from her family and friends in California. So her friends in New York, where she now lives, decided that their shower would be all about books for the baby to celebrate the expecting mom's love of literature. Not just any books, but books they had loved when they were little.
