Everything You Need to Know About

Guacamole

Guacamole hasn’t changed much from the time it was invented by the Aztecs in Central Mexico in the 1500s. Traditionally made using avocados, tomatoes, chiles, and salt, Spanish explorers added onions, cilantro, and lime juice to the dish.

It takes only a few minutes to make a batch, and in the grand snacking scheme, guacamole is pretty virtuous: Avocados are rich in hearty, healthy monounsaturated fats and contain more potassium than a banana. (Great news for football fans, considering that 79 million pounds of avocados are consumed during Super Bowl festivities!)

Use freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice for the best flavor. Raw onions on the strong side for your guests? To take the edge off, soak diced onions in cold water for 10 minutes and drain. And think beyond the classic red onion –- sweet varieties of onions as well as scallions make excellent additions.

Serve guacamole with crudites and tortilla chips. Or dollop onto scrambled eggs and bean soups. It also makes a great filling for sandwiches and tacos. National Guacamole Day is September 16, but you can enjoy this delicious, healthy dip year-round.
