Accordion-Folded Clip-Art Valentines

This colorful graphic valentine idea comes from Erin Jang of The Indigo Bunting. "When it comes to creating paper goods, I love bright colors and working with unusual formats and folds," Jang says. Using an old-fashioned allusion device known as a rebus, the sweet message is spelled out with images and words.

  • Ruler
  • X-Acto knife
  • Pen
  • Clip art
  • A small jewelry box (1.5" x 2.5" x .75") or a business-card-size envelope.
  • Self-healing mat or other cutting surface

  1. Step 1

Print out the card design on an 8.5"-x-11" midweight sheet of paper. Two sizes are provided -- one to fit into a small matchbox-size jewelry box, and a larger size to fit into a business-card-size envelope.

  2. Step 2

Using an X-Acto knife, metal ruler, and a self-healing mat, cut out the provided design.

  3. Step 3

Score the card in four places, where the colored panels meet.

  4. Step 4

Fold where the card is scored to get an accordion-fold look.

  5. Step 5

The smaller size fits perfectly into a small matchbox-size jewelry box.

  6. Step 6

    The larger design will fit perfectly into a business-card-size envelope measuring 2 1/4" x 3 1/2."
