Ten years ago, when Josie Maran first learned about argan oil, she was on a modeling assignment in France. The then little-known Moroccan emollient did more than soothe her dry, irritated skin (an occupational hazard); it sparked a revelation and the 2007 launch of her brand, Josie Maran Cosmetics. Her goal was simple: to create a range of natural, effective, and luxurious beauty products. Having accomplished just that, this ecobeauty guru embraces life’s simple pleasures, whether at her L.A. home or her family’s rural Pennsylvania farm.

Her Favorite Things
Homemade pizza is Maran’s guilty pleasure. “This pizza stone makes the best crust. Use your hands to knead the dough and a wine bottle to roll it out,” she says. Not only has she taken a pizza-making class, it’s become an activity when friends come over to visit. “I lay out the toppings and everyone designs their own and we grill them.” But when she ventures out for pie, Pace in Laurel Canyon is her go-to.

Josie Maran Argan Oil
This bottle of argan oil quickly became her best seller.
“We don’t have a no-no list of ingredients, we have a yes-yes list.” That includes using elements that are organic, paraben- and fragrance-free, recyclable, biodegradable, and PETA-approved. “It’s all about positive messaging, giving back and inspiring women to love themselves,” says Maran.

Breaking Beauty Rules
“Use fingers instead of brushes; it’s more creative and less technical and you really can’t make a mistake," Maran says. "Don’t like the effect? Just blend it out.”
