This traditional African game is easy to improvise. All you’ll need is an egg carton and 48 “pieces.” (Have your kids collect small pebbles at the beach or in the backyard.) Here’s one way to play:

  1. Place four pieces in each cup.
  2. Player 1 removes all the pieces from any one cup and “sows” them, dropping a piece in each consecutive cup, moving clockwise. Repeat with each successive player. (As the game goes on, some cups will accumulate more pieces than others.)
  3. If the last piece a player sows lands in a cup with one or two pieces, the player removes all of them (for tallying at game’s end).
  4. Continue until all pieces have been removed or no further “captures” can be made. The player with the most pieces wins.
